MC Presents Spring Pops Concert

The McPherson College Department of Music will present its Spring Pops Concert on Sunday, May 4, at 4 p.m. in Mingenback Theatre. The concert is free and open to the public. The program will feature the colors and sounds of spring through the lighter classical and Broadway literature. The audience will be seated at tables and treated to an ice cream sundae bar.

The McPherson College Choir will perform vocal highlights from the musical “A Chorus Line” and will present well-known selections including “Over the Rainbow,” “I Got Rhythm,” and “When I Fall in Love.” Popular music selections will include “You’re the Inspiration,” originally performed by Chicago, and Billy Joel’s “Lullabye (Goodnight My Angel).”

The Wind Ensemble will present standards including “Chester Overture for Band,” “Holiday for Winds,” and Clifton Williams’ “Festival.” Popular pieces such as “Slide by Slide” and “Home on the Range” will compliment this section of the program. Student conductors Rebecca Snell, McPherson, and Nicholas Griggs, Colorado Springs, will conduct Giovanni’s “Fanfare,” “Chorale and Fugue,” and the Gillis “Spiritual.”

Rounding out the program will be the McPherson College Singers and the Women’s Sextet. They will entertain the audience with numbers such as “Route 66,” “Music of the Night” from “Phantom of the Opera,” “Isn’t it Romantic,” “Chatanooga Choo Choo,” and the “Lollipop” hit by the Chordettes.

The McPherson College Choir is directed by Dr. Steven Gustafson, professor of music and a member of the faculty since 1980. The group is accompanied by Jenny Williams, well-known area musician and accompanist. Directing the McPherson College Wind Ensemble is Dr. Larry Kitzel, longtime college faculty member and low brass performer.
